French and Spanish
 
Language is a key factor in the development of international understanding and, as such, has an important role at I.S.B.

The Foreign Language program at I.S.B. is designed for students who would like to enhance their understanding of the target culture and its people through their language. We currently offer French and Spanish as a Foreign Language to students who are enrolled in first through fifth grade. We offer Serbian Mother Tongue to students who are already fluent speakers of Serbian. 

The Foreign Language program aims to develop children's fundamental language skills and enable them to understand and communicate in the target language. Throughout the year students will learn vocabulary on a variety of topics, practice their pronunciation through cooperative exercises, and improve their communication skills by taking part in a variety of engaging classroom activities.
 
Learning a language is an interactive and cooperative experience where participation is highly valued. To acquire language students must engage in listening and speaking in a highly motivating and positive environment.
 
Our Foreign Language program is designed to meet the level of each individual student. Students will progress through the below listed levels over the course of the program at their individual pace.
 

In level 1, students are expected to:
Speaking and Listening
  • Use basic vocabulary to describe assorted object in everyday environments
  • Give and follow simple instructions
  • Demonstrate comprehension of words and phrases by following routine classroom instructions, using single words or very short phrases, and identifying objects and numbers 1-20
  • Recognize single words or phrases in texts and provides key words in a class reading of a story students know well
  • Understand the main ideas of ability-appropriate video or television programs on familiar topics
  • Use single words (objects, colors, numbers) or short phrases in action-related activities, songs and games in the target language
Reading and Writing
  • Know basic elements of the sound and writing systems in the target language and how these elements differ from the same elements of one’s native language
In the level 2, students are expected to:
Speaking and Listening
  • Use the target language to express likes, dislikes, and personal preferences (e.g., objects, people, events, favorite activities, food, celebrations) in everyday environments
  • Use appropriate vocabulary, gestures, and oral expressions for greetings, introductions, leave takings, and other common or familiar interactions
  • Demonstrate comprehension of single items of information, such as number, color and location, through action, drawing, mime, drama, or by responding to questions
Reading and Writing
  • Read words on labels/captions and short phrases or sentences in a very well known book
  • Understand brief written messages and personal notes on familiar topics (e.g., everyday school and home activities)
  • Understand oral and written descriptions of people and objects in the environment
  • Respond to questions in everyday classroom and social routines (e.g., greetings, self, friends, belongings, roll call, date, weather, birthday song, naming objects, stating number)
  • Write and spell correctly single words or phrases to complete a simple sentence
  • Present simple oral reports or presentations about family members and friends, objects present in the everyday environment, and common school and home activities
In level 3, students are expected to:
Speaking
  • Communicate with comprehensible pronunciation and intonation
  • Use a variety of vocabulary with accuracy appropriate to the level
  • Request and provide information spontaneously on a range of topics within their experience using comprehensible pronunciation and intonation
  • Take part in conversation and dialogue and express personal feelings and opinions
  • Take part in formal and informal discussion on a variety of topics related to the areas of interaction and to cultural issues
Writing
  • Communicate effectively and appropriately in writing about concrete or familiar situations
  • Communicate effectively for a variety of purposes through the appropriate use of grammatical structures, vocabulary and spelling
Listening
  • Understand an appropriately paced conversation from various sources on a variety of concrete or familiar topics
  • Understand formal and informal presentations, given in target language by native speakers, on a variety of concrete or familiar topics including cultural issues
  • Understand specific factual information and attitudes expressed in a spoken context even where some unfamiliar language is included
  • Recognize some different types of discourse and main ideas and draw conclusions
Reading
  • Demonstrate comprehension of ideas in a variety of authentic material including literary and non-literary texts, some of which may be simplified
  • Identify important points, main ideas and supporting details
  • Extract relevant information and draw conclusions
  • Identify some aspects of style
