Beginning with 2014, Europe has experienced a massive influx of Middle Eastern refugees which continues to this day. Serbia is in a particularly delicate situation as it lies directly on the path of the Balkan route, which millions of refugees have taken in the past three years. Most of the refugees in Serbia are “stuck”, as they are unable to enter the European Union, nor are they willing to return to their war-torn homelands. “Sports without Borders” focuses on supporting the most vulnerable groups amongst the refugees – minors without parental care. Through this service project, our students have the opportunity to provide brief relief from the appalling experience which these children have experienced on their journey. Once per week, ISB opens its doors to these refugee children and invites them to play sports with our students. The school works closely on this project with the Belgrade Municipality of Palilula and the Crisis Response and Policy Center.
